Sunrise Surprise with Meenakshi

If you believe that you don’t enjoy early morning yoga classes, you may have missed studying with longtime yoga teacher and practitioner, Meenakshi Moses.  At 7:30 am Wednesdays and Fridays at Aloha, a small crew of pre-breakfast yoga students assemble to practice an eclectic mix of qigong tapping, breathing practices, sun salutations and traditional Hatha yoga asanas.  Led by a seasoned professional, the practice flows as easily as the early morning sun streams through the East window. The first golden rays illuminate the Hindu goddess, Lakshmi, smiling encouragingly at the center of the mural.

Meenakshi began her yoga journey 1985 at the Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Center in NYC. As she studied for a degree in Classics at NYU, yoga provided her the opportunity to move her body and relax her mind. Meenakshi finished her degree, subsequent graduate work and migrated upstate to work and live at the Sivananda Ashram Yoga Ranch. There she met her future husband, Robert Moses.  Meenakshi and Robert live in Dublin, NH where they bought a home and raised their 3 children.

Meenakshi has studied within various schools of yoga including Sivananda, Ashtanga, Iyengar, Shadow Yoga, Yoga Sangraha and most recently Kundalini Yoga & Sukshma Vyayama as taught by Reinhard Gammenthaler. Meenakshi continues to deepen her appreciation for the teaching of yoga and its origins in India, studying Sanskrit and  reading Mahabharata and Ramayana. When Aloha opened its doors in 2019, she drew from her studies to teach the practices that her students now enjoy.

Once a year Meenakshi and Robert lead a group on Yatra, a pilgrimage, to India to practice yoga, visit sacred sites, take holy dips in sacred rivers, and dive deeply into yogic traditions and culture. For more information and some really great photographs, visit: namarupa.org

In addition to classes at Aloha, Meenakshi teaches yoga at 7 am Mondays in Harrisville, 6:30 am Tuesdays at the  Dublin Community Center. You can also join her online to practice Sukshma Vyayama 7:30am Saturday mornings.

Students of all levels can reap the benefits of early morning yoga, modifying within the class structure as individually needed. Beginning each day by moving with intention and focus, breathing deeply, and paying attention will build confidence, awareness and comfort to set you up for a grounded and peaceful day.
